What should I do with Winter flowering pansies?
If the weather doesn't get too hot, you could still have pansies past May. I have them in planters on my deck and beside my driveway, and I just plant petunias or impatiens in with them, and as the others get big and it gets hot, the pansies just go. If I remember, I pull them out, but the other plants usually just cover them up anyway.

If you keep them dead-headed, they will bloom as long as the weather is still fairly cool.

Winter-flowering pansies is really a misnomer, something retailers thought up to sell them in the fall. Pansies are pansies. There really is no difference between winter pansies and spring pansies.

Reply:If they are in the ground - nothing at all. I love pansies for their low-maintenance.

If they are in a pot inside...I'd keep taking care of them inside, and then plant them out in late spring. (Plant them out earlier, and they might die of shock, as they aren't acclimated to the winter, having been in a house.)
Reply:pansies are a winter flower. dead head them during the winter but once spring gets here they are pretty much done. pull up and throw away and plant something else for the summer

I think mine acts more like a dog. and when I say dog, I mean like the little pansy dogs that get carried everywhere and have their own special carrying bag. my cat is a diva.

My 24 pound Maine Coon cat comes when I whistle. He likes to wrestle. Today he caught a mouse and didn't seem to know what to do with it.
Reply:Hi Sylas...both my cats think they are dogs in disguise. Both cats love to go for car rides and walks so to ensure they will be safe on our outdoor excursions I've decided to leash train them. I think they enjoy it even more now since they can go anywhere I go and meet people and dogs who come to sniff them out.

They also can put dogs to shame as both my housecats not only understand obedience commands (come, sit, down, etc) but are also toilet trained, can flush the toilet, go to wherever I point, follow a target anywhere, jump through hoops, roll over, fetch, take apart a 3-D layered puzzle, wave, give a high-five, raise a paw to ask a question, fetch, do agility (like dog agility), walk on a leash in public and so much more. They understand both visual and verbal cues/signals as well and learn most new behaviours quite quickly within a matter of days and for the more complex behaviours such as balancing and walking on a basketball in a month.

I have two that act more like dogs: one fetches and returns paper clips when I throw them to her; the other goes outside on a leash (I don't let my cats out unattended) and also likes riding around on my shoulder and playing in the toilet (he always takes his toys and drops them in; he's lost quite a few when someone didn't look before they went to the bathroom) or in any sort of water (if you let him in the bathroom, he'll walk into the shower while you're in it; one time, I fell asleep in the bathtub and when I woke up, he was sleeping on top of me, in the water). Everyone who has met the second one (the leash/toilet/shower cat) loves him, especially the people who usually don't like cats. They always say that he acts like a dog and that's why they think he's cool. He is cool, but he's a total freak. He loves riding in cars (he likes to perch on the dashboard on on the headrest) and you can take him anywhere and he doesn't get freaked out...he seems instantly at home no matter where you take him.

My 6 month old Husky mix PUPPY acts like a cat!

He lives with 5 cats, so he's definitely the minority here!

He's picked up several traits from the cats like:

- licking his paws %26amp; cleaning his face

- Using his paws instead of his nose or mouth to get your attention or during play

- He'll lay on his back while the cats lick his face

I think if he could fit into the litter box he would use it like they do! What a relief that would be... not having to take him outside to poop %26amp; pee 20 times a day!

my first cat developed many routines which she held onto steadfast til day she passed away.

now, our second cat acts very peculiar like a dog. he goes outside every morning and stays outside (where he does all of his business) until he is let in around 4-5:30. he never goes in the litterbox (keep one just in case) and he sleeps ALL night long right next to me.

his favorite toy: a crumpled up piece of paper. on nice days i go outside and throw it as he chases. we haven't quite got him to bring it back everytime but he has once or twice!

Will Spring Flowering Pansies survive frost or snow?

I've got some hanging baskets with spring flowering pansies in them and someone mentioned that we're in for some cold weather at the weekend with snow in parts. I've looked on the internet but opinions seem to differ and I wondered if anyone out there could give me any advice. I don't want them to die but on the other hand I don't always get to see the weather forecast and could get caught out at a later date.

I think it always depends on how cold and how long the cold is going to stay around. If the freeze is at night and only stays below 32º for an hour or so, you will be fine. My pansies have survived more than that and are in full bloom right now.

Reply:Survive snow, yes. Survive frost (if it's heavy), probably not. Surprisingly, snow will protect your flowers from getting killed by a hard freeze. It acts as a blanket. But if the forecast is for well-below freezing with winds, the flowers may be damaged. You can protect them by putting an old towel over them overnight.

Reply:As far as I can tell Pansie is a terrible name to call someone you think is weak. Pansies in zone seven thrive even through the cold snaps we have here. For example: It was 70 degrees 2 weeks ago on Sunday, snowed all day Thursday and was 50 again on Friday. It only got down to like 28 that time but it's known to get down in the teens. Pansies are strong plants and can handle way more than you think. And even if there laying flat on the ground from some bad weather most of the time they will get back up and go again.

I want to replant with bedding but the pansies are still in full bloom and I don't want to kill them off, but am worried I might leave it to late for me summer bedding. the pansies also have a white powder dust on the leaves, Is this a sign of their end of season?. Thanks. Peter.

You don't tell me where you live...that being said; pansies are a "cool" season plant...so they should start flagging say when the temps in your area are consistently above 90 degrees...But plant your "hot" season plants now...Then they'll be ready to take over...
Reply:The thing with pansies is they self seed, this why you still have them. The white powder sounds like mildew, take them all out and make sure you use fresh compost.
Reply:I would agree that the white powder is likely to be powdery mildew. The pansies will be stressed by now hence the mildew, you can transplant them and this often gives them a fresh flush of life but in reality if you want Summer Bedding to give you any worthwhile show then you need to get them into the beds now, should have been in 3 or more weeks ago.

Yes just like in a greenhouse, need plenty of sunlight.
Reply:It's always worth trying your skills with growing plants indoors.

Water regularly, but lightly, and not on the leaves. Keep out of direct sunlight. If not enough light, then arrange a foil, light reflector near the plants.

A small plant feeding stick in each container will help to feed the plants via the roots.

The container for the snapdragons needs to be a little deeper than for the violas, which have a more fibrous root system,

They are still going really strong, i took down my winter hanging basket today and replanted them into tubs as i thought it would be a shame to throw them away. There are evern new flowers still coming on them.

They go on for ages, they come out in the winter because they tolerate the cold weather, but also thrive if looked after in the summer.

Any reasons for the thumbs down, seems rather silly for three good replies.
Reply:Pansies do not like heat. Yes, it is a shame to have to throw them away, but you can always attempt to save some seed for next planting. I live in the deep south, plant my pansies in November. They are now getting scruffy looking. I plan on letting some flowers dry out before I pull them up, so that I can collect seeds. Pansies generally do not live thru the summer, unless you live in a very mild, northern climate with cool summers. My pansies will be totally gone by the end of May.

As long as your pansies are still blooming, great. However, mine did a profuse bloom before they started producing tiny stunted blooms. Depending on your region, they may start to wither sometime in the next few weeks. Good luck.
Reply:pansies are actually perennial so they should with any luck stay alive all summer and flower again next winter although i do find it can be a bit hit and miss as to whether they survive

When people answer my questions I just love all of them and want to invite them all to my house for tea , then later maybe a movie and Monopoly or to just ask each other questions all night. I love it. I hate picking the BEST because everyone is the BEST for even caring. Right? Or am I being a Pansy?

You're being a pansy :-) The one that speaks to you and your heart at that moment is the one to choose.

You have a point, I've gotten some real caring and suprisingly smart answers from the community - and I am thankful, but we can only pick one. I always make it a point to, as you are doing, commend and thank the others, then move on to the next thing.

The worst decision is INDECISION :-)

Reply:When I get a best answer I am thrilled that I have in some small way helped someone. I had one the other day (I did only a little research, from the other side of the world and found exactly what this person was looking for) she was so appreciative she called me an angel! That made my whole week! I appreciate all the people that take the time to answer but I think the people who write nasty things or inappropriate things spoil it for others, like us, we should just ignore them. I like your idea, why don't you put a suggestion to yahoo that they change the points system for say people with level 3, 4 so they can choose 1, 2 or 3 answers. Good 1 points, Better 3, points, Best 6 points? or something like that.

hi sebastian , i read your question and its considered wrong in society because of down the thousands of years of evolution ,both males and females were categorized by there gender qualities,but societys thinking and expectations on males were different , society thinks that if males cry then we are showing a female trait/quality and that shows weakness, this is not truth of course but its what societys believes and society does not want males to feel this crying emotion due to wanting males to be strong and show that they can cope with anything, as they think this is the answer to coping through adversity, the strong survive but the weak emotional ones fall by the wayside, this is also incorrect thinking by society but its what society thinks.So it is very wrong that people call you a pansy, im very sorry they do that but untill society changes there crazy,long held ideas then it will not change, its only healthy for males and females to cry and release our emotions, if we store them up and dont release them then one day the anger from not releasing the hurt and pain will turn into rage,so i really hope that you can reason with those people who call you that name and hopefully maybe they might stop it ,i really hope they do, so i wish you my greatest wishes take good care bye sebastion

Notre Dame had a whore on retainer and gets a slap on the wrist. What would have happened to other schools with the same infractions? OU gets busted outright for paying players and basically got nothing.Do these institutions have pictures of the NCAA Committee taking advantage of Donkeys behind their respective AG Centers?

Norte Dame in the rankings. 10 bowl games in 10 years without a win. Obviously they need a easier opponent.. Actually the SEC gets the benefit of the doubt as well for rankings even if it is the hardest conference in football. The SEC plays more division ll teams in football period. Look it up!

USC. Reggie took money as well as Garrett. It should come more out in the media, but USC is the only west coast team that can compete in college football. It gets thrown under the rug.

Miami in a negative aspect. Not all their players are criminals! only 95 percent!

Ohio State didn't get hit that hard. Alabama did because of Tennessee.

It all depends on the media and I guess the coach at the time if he has a good repore with the NCAA.

Money! OSU, USC, Michigan, ND, OU, and other such high status football programs will get nothing because they bring in money...plain and simple. If the NCAA grew a pair, and tried to scorn one of those teams like they do the likes of a..(oh lets just say...) Illinois, South Carolina, UNC, Texas Tech, Mississippi, MSU, Arizona, or another mid-tier team, they would be shooting themselves in the foot. The would lose a ton of money if they struck down a team like OSU. OSU is money on TV. So is ND. Hell....NBC might get mad at the NCAA if they even looked at ND the wrong way. But no worries....because it just wont happen! Any team that rakes in THAT much money on a saturday for TV ratings and sellouts, they wouldnt dare touch up like that!!

If it's a disgrace to play a Division II team how about a Division III team? The SEC has played a Division III team 581 times, Pac 10- 307 times, Big 12- 455 times, and the Big 10- 1,254 times. So the SEC doesn't pad their schedule with easy opponents anymore than (and a lot less than some) anyone else. Despite playing in the toughest conference in the NCAA. When you play Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee each week; who could blame you for scheduling an easier team the other weeks.

I personally think we've turned quarterbacks into a bunch of p*ssies. I understand rules that keep you from purposely taking cheap shots at quarterbacks. But I'm tired of Dlinesmen running full-speed at a qb, tryign to stop, accidentally bumping into the guy and knock them over and the refs throwing a flag over it. I especially hate the qb slide rule. I understand you don't want your qb to get hit. It's f*cking football. If you don't want to be hit, don't run the ball. Take a frickin' knee if you're that much of a pansy.

What do you think of all the rules surrounding quarterbacks in the NFL?
If you are not man enough to take a hit, get off of the field. If taking a hit is too "dangerous" for you, then retire and I assure you that there is no shortage of people who would love to take your place. Making millions each year and living the celebrity lifestyle.

All the people who like the "QB protection rules", answer me one question.... If football is constantly preached as a "team" sport, then why is one player singled out and seperate rules applied when it comes to making contact with him? Goes against the whole philosophy of the game in my opinion. All 11 guys win together, lose together, and should take their lumps together. The NFL has been trying for years to "tone down" the violence of the game, yet all players are taught to go "All Out" from the first day they ever strap on a set of pads. Let these guys hit each other and the strong will survive.
Reply:you must be a D-linemen....can u imagine how it feels getting thrown to the ground 20-30 times a week by guys that out weigh u anywhere from 75lbs- 200+lbs, also getting hit at full speed over and over? i understand that it makes the QB seem weak with all these dumb rules protecting them...but it make since...last year how many QBs got carted of the field cause they didnt slide , or they took that one blow from that Linebacker...that knocked him out for 8+ games....Trent Green Lost his starting spot because of it...Drew Bledsue lost his place in NE cause of Mo Lewis Knocking him sinceless...which gave Tom Brady his window to play. Steve Young- Troy Aikman, all ended their career short cause of constant shots to the head....i feel that both QBs had at least 2 or 3 more yrs in them. Look at Steve Humphreys...the year after coming off his Superbowl got popped in the Head so hard he pretty much lost 3 seasons from that hit. If they didnt set those rules there...some of ur GOOD QBs wouldnt be able play cause they get knocked out. you are not just playing a game, someone get a concussion, you are playing with lives and futures beyond the NFL. a former NFL player said once, "being in the NFL is not Life, its a Dream....Life starts after its all over...."

I've just bought some hanging baskets, but I want to put something different in them, I dont want the same old boring Lobelia or pansy's. I want something different to everyone else, If possible something that will keep flowering or a mix of different plants that will keep the flowers coming. Any ideas.

Try Creeping Phlox. They will come back every year and they come in several colors. They will creep over the edge of the container like its spilling out.....pretty dramatic effect. I have a neighbor that has planted some in a bucket and he has tilted the buck to look like the phlox is pouring out of the bucket....its a very cool sight to see.
Reply:as long as you keep them watered all year you can grow any kind of hardy perenials creepers/spreading plants,campanulas,these will flower all summer, snow in summer, these flower late spring and go into summer,sedums with red or yellow flowers,creeping jenny is a good one with yellow flowers,you could put different varieties in and you keep the foliage on these kind of plants.,they don't have to be hanging plants as creepers will hang over the basket anyway as they grow. theres lots, try a few experiments!. good luck.

Or you could go with the other Lotus berthelotii, worth growing for it's foliage alone.

Million Bells (Callbrachoa). A petunia relative with small bell-shaped blooms in white, pink, cherry, violet, terra-cotta, or yellow. Trailing and compact forms bloom prolifically all season. Sun or light shade.

Scaevola aemula. Lavender blue fan-shaped flowers. Trailing forms include 'Blue Wonder' and 'Colonial Fan'

Rosa Northamptonshire with its trailing habit %26amp; repeat flowering, is a low growing ground cover rose that can be used in a hanging basket. You could compliment it pale pink flowers with the stronger pink of Verbena Pink Parfait, ans maybe also Convolvulus sabatius with its small china blue flowers.

Or you could have a combo of Mimulus "viva" (monkey flower), with Lysimachia congestiflora (outback sunset), with orange nasturtiums like 'salmon baby', for a nice sunset colour basket.

Also nice as filler plants in a basket are Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea'.... Helichrysum petiolare "aureum"... Brachycome multifida are great light blue flowers with orange/yellow centres...

Reply:A nice fine mist of a hot pepper sauce will fix that. Spray the plants and wait.
Reply:One thing you could do is make sort of like a cage out of wire or netting for your plants to be in. They'll still get the rain and sun, but the birds won't bother them. Another thing you can do that works pretty well is put a few fake owls or hawks around your plants. Pigeons aren't as afraid of scarecrows but you could try that too. As long as you move them around every few days or once everyweek, they should stay cautious of the objects and keep their distance. Do you have any bird feeders near the plants? If you do, you might could try moving them far away so the pigeons and doves would be attracted to the seed instead of coming to eat your plants, since their main diet is of seed and grains.

I haven't found pepper sauce to help much with keeping birds away, but the net/wire barriers are the best thing you can do. Shooting and poisoning should be your very last options. I don't know about you, but I like having wild birds in my yard. Besides, they're just trying to find a little something to eat during the cold winter months. You can't really blame them for that.

Morning sun, pm shade. place a strip of saran wrap over the pot to create a greenhouse effect. Use a mild mixture of miracle gro and water.(after they begin to sprout, use the miracle gro plant food sticks! (They're $1 or so, then only use water). Never pour miracle gro into the green plant itself, it will burn it. make sure you use good potting mix and not cheap stuff. They should also be exposed to the pollen (which is shedding right now so lose the saran wrap or create holes for the pollen to get in........)

I usually plant my seeds and seedlings in Miracle Gro potting soil which contains a slow release version of their fertilizer. Once established I use Miracle Gro to fertilize through the growing season. It's also good for houseplants but don't mix the fertilizer as strong as you would for outside plants. The directions and dilution ratios are on the package.

Our high school football team had a remarkable season last year. We made it to state for the 1st time in 19 years. However, we lost the state championship game to a school that recrutes good atheltes from all over the country and keeps the enrollment down so the have easy competition in lower competition classes. It is an age old debate of public schools vs private schools. It is a competition in which the public schools often come out on the short end of the stick on.

While it may not be fair, It certainly does not make them a pansy school. I know in NJ, there is always an uproar that public schools do not want to play the bigger private schools such as Don Bosco, Bergen Catholic and such... The results are usually a blowout...

I can see both sides of the issue but there doesn't seem to be a great answer...

depending on where you live, pansies can live through the winter.. In my area, they are spring and fall plants. the heat is too much for them in the summer.. I'll bet you get a nice fall display from them.. and maybe even next spring from the same plants.

Flowering plants which do well for me: impatiens, astilbe, bleeding heart, foxglove, columbine, primroses, evening primroses

Foliage plants: hostas, ferns, coleus- some of these are as showy if not more than the flowering ones.

Jacob's Ladder (I have a beautiful variegated variety called Brise d'Anjou) is an example of both foliage and flowering plant.

Ground cover: Ivy and vinca (with mauve flowers) is what I grow in the Bay Area in CA. Also, green moss (Scotch/ Irish), baby's tears, etc.

All these require different levels of shade and moisture, so check what would work for your garden site and geographic area.

I have had that problem in Arizona, during Cricket season, they cover my house sometimes, enter in through the garage and get inside the house. I have went into my bathroom and killed one after another... ick! The best solution I have found is sealing off your house (or in your case basement) and set off a few of the store bought bug bombs. You can find them most anywhere, leave them for around 2 hours and you should come home to a ton of dead crickets. Good luck!

I dont understand. There are 10 tall skinny guys who throw a ball in a basket. When they get the slightest tap on the arm or whatever, they complain and its against the rules. If they get slightly shoved, they fall to the ground and complain. Or they lie there because that tiny push hurt them soooo bad. I see it as a real pansy sport with no contact and a lot of whining. Everyone tries to get all pumped up with it but how can you with skinny lanky guys complaining about someone slapping them and then trying to act tough? Why don't people watch a real sport like hockey or football?

Basketball these days sucks. It went from a game of skill revolving around team play and shooting (when whites were the majority) to an athletic competition where the only point to is showboat and get yourself in the highlight reels.

I understand exactly what you're saying, but what if I asked you why people watch football or baseball. How would that make you feel? Basketball is my favorite thing to watch on TV and without it, what do you think life could possibly be like to basketball fans? How would we know who wins or looses games? Since I never have free tickets to a basketball game or something like that, I could just watch it on TV and asked my friends or family how it was like.

They have to have skills such as dribbling without looking at the ball, shooting while driving to the basket or pulling up for 2 or 3 pt jumpers, rebounding against other big powerful men, and play as a team.

It hold some of the greatest players in the world. Just like football, baseball, and hockey, you either like it or you dont. A little question requiring a very large answer. If this assignment is due soon, I would use radish or navy bean seeds, very quick germination. You also need to be able to check your pH, ask your teacher or buy an inexpensive kit of your own from a big box store. Sand should have a pH close to whatever your waters pH is. Potting soil should be in the range quoted by T-bone, 5.5-6.5. Garden soil will be unknown until you test. RScott
Reply:It affects the plant's ability to take up nutrients from the soil. There can be plenty of nutrients available, but if the pH isn't right then the chemistry of the plant won't work correctly. Eventually the plant will probably die. You can tell the kind of nutrient deficiency by looking at the kind of discoloration in the leaves:

Reply:pH generally affects what nutrients are available to the plant. If pH is too high or low, nutrients such as iron, magnesium etc may be present in the soil, but the plant won't be able to access them. They'll be 'locked up', so to speak.

Ideal pH for most plants usually rests between 5.5 and 6.5

Because pansies are a cool weather crop - they don't like the heat! If you have some that survive the summer, you will see that they perk up when the weather starts to cool in the Fall.

Good answer from the first contributor. Want to add that if you're trying to limp pansies through the summer you must be on the lookout for aphids. I almost guarantee you will have them.

Although pansies are perennial in their natural state, they are used as an annual in north america. I strongly suggest that you change your color for the summer. Pansies are best between October and May. Use periwinkles for a similar effect from May to October.

I bought two six-packs of pansies (annuals) and haven't planted them yet. I'm in Maryland and we're expecting freezing temperatures the next couple of nights (no lower than 28 degrees). Will the pansies be ok outside in their little containers or should I bring them inside? I don't think I'll have a chance to plant them before the temperature starts falling. Thanks

their delicate, tissue like flower petals hold up really well to sudden frosts so long as it's not prolonged more than a day or so. They take more damage from being trampled, high winds, and very heavy rains than from frost.

I love planting them in rocky flowerbeds and letting them overrun the flowerbed along with dwarf snapdragons... ;-p

Reply:If they are little tiny green bugs that look kind of transparent, they are aphids. They are making holes to eat the sweet sap from the plant. I would recommend sevin dust or if you want to stay orgainic, sprinkle some salt water on them. They have a high water content and the salt will dehydrate and kill them.

Don't use too much salt or you will kill the plant too. Doesn't take much since they are so small.

Yes, there are lots of plants you can use, Euonymus which is a low growing plant that has variegated leaved, usually green/cream very pretty. Also what about dogwood? that has no leaves in winter but has bright red or yellow stems that look attractive all winter long. Perhaps one or two small evergreen firs? Juniper has berries and also a lovely blue/grey colour. Pyracantha that climbs up walls, it has small green leaves and masses of bright red or orange berries in winter. Of course various heathers look good as well. Hope this helps.

Reply:You do not say if you live in the UK or how much space you have available but if you have room for a small evergreen shrub go for Sarcococca confusa as a background plant.

Sarcococca is a dark green evergreen plant that flowers in December/January, it has tiny white flowers that are heavily scented. The perfume will knock you out.

Trim it in early spring to keep it in shape. Whatever else you choose to plant around it will show up beautifully against the dark green of the shrub.

I had a root canal in November to my front upper tooth - the pain after was much worse than the pain before the procedure. Endodontist decided he needed to REDO the root canal after two months of antibiotics.

It has now been 4 weeks since the procedure, my tooth still throbs and I can't bite into things. Regular dentist and endo are talking about surgery to "save" the tooth, but they can't tell me what's wrong with it or why it still hurts. I've never heard of such a fiasco over a tooth - have you? And everyone keeps telling me that after a root canal there should be no sensation in the tooth, so why is there pain?? I'm not a pansy about pain, but this is getting to be a joke . . .

Depends on the type of plant really...can't give you much more information other than that when I don't know what you have in the ground.

The pansies might come back, but I doubt it. They're a very vascular plant (water in the stems/leaves) and if they froze, then the tissue will die and they will die too.

Your hostas should be fine. They will get brown edges and if it was really cold, they will get frost burn pretty bad but they should manage to survive. Make sure not to cut the dead stalks back until you are sure it won't freeze again, however, because cutting the stalks off will encourage the plant to send up new stalks and the tender growth will be more vulnerable to the cold.

I think they're the most entertaining club in the Premiership but if all that entertainment leads to nothing, then you can't consider them a good club. Have you noticed that most of the SEC losses are to other SEC teams? It's because the SEC has so many good teams. I have a terrible aphid infestation on my pansies.Have sprayed twice with little results. Help?
There's a great product made by BAYER and is sold under the name of: "BAYER ADVANCED GARDEN MULTI-INSECT KILLER" and is found sold at most hardware stores. The active ingredient in the product is called "IMIDACLOPRID" and it is very safe to humans and animals.

It does an excellent job in controlling most of your sucking insects such as; Aphids, whiteflies, scale, mealybugs, thrips and psyllids. The only sucking insect it doesn't control are mites.

You simply mix this liquid product with water and apply it to the soil around the base of your ornamental plants. Once it's applied, the roots of your plants will take it in and then translocate the material up to the foilage. It usually takes about 3 or 4 days before you begin to see control but one application will usually last the entire growing season! I've used it on the ornamental trees on my property and it works extremely well controlling the aphids, scale and mealybugs.

Keep in mind that it doesn't work if you spray it directly onto the insects or foilage.

Aphids reproduce at the rate of 200 more every 2 weeks, per female Females are born prego

The soap spray would be better for babies, pets and your lungs. Plus a host of beneficials like dragon and butterflies and bees.

The soap plugs up the pours in aphid type insects, for those that handle their food, it gives them terminal dysentary

To have some control, you need to spray your plants every 7 to 10 days from frost out to frozen ground for about 3 years

Reply:I have three recommendations.

1 - Diotomaceous Earth. Consisting of ground up microscopic fossilized plankton skeletons, once spread on plants, it is as if the bugs are walking on broken glass. It's particularly effective against aphids as all they are is little green bags of water... break the "bag" and they simply dry up and blow away. A simplistic description, yes... but how it basically works. The down side... it will have a negative effect on ALL garden bugs, even the beneficial ones, and it needs to be reapplied often especially after rain and wind. The up side, it's largely inert, however, if inhaled it can be VERY irritating, so exercise caution in its application.

2 - Wood ashes. Not as effective as diotomaceous earth, but a whole lot less expensive, especially if you burn wood. Works on the same basic principle as #1.

3 - Soapy water. Aphids drink a lot. If you spray concentrated soapy water on your plants, the aphids will ingest the soap. Essentially, this gives them terminal diarrhoea! Certainly not as effective as poison... but it has the advantage of NOT being poison. You can use ordinary dish soap and a spray bottle to apply it.

None of the above suggestions will likely totally cure your aphid problem. However, they all have the advantage of not putting poison in your yard that can have negative effects on everything in the food chain... including YOU.

Ladybugs also love mealy bugs on houseplants, if you don't mind sharing your home with ladybugs (I share mine with 'em - I think they're cute!)

I have tried everything in the past except the ladybugs - which have been recommeded to me by a landscaper, just waiting until spring to get some and see if this year I can have my lupins (aphids seem to like them too)

Since having our house built and moving to a development in a rural area last November the pigs have had many parties under our large oak tree. They never attacked the area when the lot was vacant, but they now destroy the area on a regular basis. They have an area of about 15' X 30' dug up to a depth of about a foot deep. It doesn't matter whether the lights are on or off. We know that they are going after the acorns, and we don't think there are any grubs. We don't want to put in a lawn that will survive the TX heat until we have solved the problem. We now only have rye grass in, but that will be dying off once it gets hot. We can use all the help that we can get. Now I'm off to figure out why this stupid robin has been banging his head on our bedroom window for almost 3 hours. Thanks much, Pansy

Not sure what the rules would be about hunting the pigs, but that's the best and easiest way to take care of them. Other than that, call the conservation department or a pest control to have them moved. The conservation department might just tell you to that you can pluck them off as needed. If you yourself do not hunt, then I am sure you can find some texas boy to do the deed. I'd love to take a couple down for you, but SW Kansas is still a ways from TX, depending on where you are.

Reply:Feral pigs are ideal for target practice. They are not protected, desired, or wanted, and if a sow has piglets she can be very dangerous. Get yourself a good rifle and start keeping count of how many you can do away with.

vista is not horrible and xp isn't gone just yet. the main problem in vista is it is new. in a computer system all hardwares must be compatible with the operating system to make it work. the problem is, microsoft doesn't manufacture most of the hardwares used thus there are incompatibilities as the manufacturers, both of the os and the hardwares, still need to fix or write new drivers smoothen other bugs and issues. that's why at the moment more computers can benefit with retaining their xp with their hardwares.

edit: very lucky for you. your one computer is very compatible with it. i have used some, repaired some and encountered some which unfortunately for this time will have to retain their xp not just for their hardwares but also softwares as well.

one more thing... vista is also a resource hog. 512mb of ram is not at all obsolete right now but you can't use it for total vista experience. as well as a 40gig hard disk for there wouldn't be much room left for other programs.

"True pansies" can weather temperatures in the single digits and bounce back after the weather warms. But they can be that strong and resourceful only if they've had a chance to get a good footing before cold weather hits.

Give pansies what they want--well-drained, rich soil in a sunny to partly shady location. Amend the soil with a little finished compost or rotted manure. To ensure good drainage and to help them stand out a bit more in your design, raise the planting bed by a few inches.

"The plants will produce new blossoms at least until it gets REALLY cold. Then, depending on the weather, you might give them a little winter protection in the North. A few evergreen boughs placed gently overtop of the plants is the ideal protection; just use cut branches from discarded Christmas trees! Don't try and really 'mulch' them--the branches are just there to prevent the plants from being crushed if we get heavy snow or ice; they don't care about the cold.

Any Northern gardeners who get a nice warm spell midwinter should remove those boughs and let the plants enjoy it--they may even flower for you!

Remove any winter protection early--in February or March here in the North; as soon as the first Spring bulbs begin to poke up. Don't worry about frost--these super-hardy posies laugh at it! Most spray can kill most bugs, (but if you really concerned, idetify the flies you have and pick the one is right for you. 2. you can also try put some water in to liquid soap to make your own soap spray. it might not as affective as the ones you buy from the store

Any team MUST play in a men way, there is no point in an always-falling way. Referee aren't a bunch of blind, drunk, cheating outlaws, and you are easily targeted if your way of play is issued by unsportsmanship. Trying to force a referee in his decision is a minor part in Italian way to play. Our defenders and midfielders (Gattuso, Perrotta) are highly physical players. Toni is physical forward. Totti had a broken leg in February, then a great recover due to willingness and mental fit. He's playing this WC at 70% his full skills, but his tactical role has no substitutes, and coach Lippi must send him on the field. Buffon recovered from an injury, but lost the main part of 2005-6 Italian 'serie A' tournament, and now we all can see his performances.

I have a little patch of "lawn" that I have been trying to grow wild flowers, after a year of no success; i decided to till up the soil and start over. Im ready to throw the new seeds out, but the word is that it is suppose to rain in a few days and get "cold" (i say "cold" because i live in California,by the beach... cold means 60 degrees.. maybe down to 40 at night). Do I wait for the rain to pass, or will the rain help the seeds sprout?

If the area is not subject to severe runoff or ponding, I'd sow my seeds. Make sure you cover them with soil as per the directions on the package. I think pansies (violas) require darkness to germinate, so check the germination requirements for light, soil cover and water. My only concern with planting before a rain is that some seeds might wash away in a severe rainstorm. Good Luck.

Our laws and values system in this country is slowly being slung out the window like a bucket of piss. The government says they are for "border control" yet hundreds slip across those borders every week. What good are laws if they are not enforced? The illegals that want to stay living here enjoying our country and not become citizens need one-way tickets back to their own country. What we need in the white house and the pentagon are some people with balls, not a bunch of big mouthed pansies. Maybe a woman does need to become President.

Reply:Pansies are quite hardy,late sowing and planting out in the autumn will produce early flowering in the spring in the UK. If your winters are a lot harder give them some preotection over the winter and try it. keep the others under cover. It is always worthwhile experimenting with plants, after all all you have lost is a bit of seed.
Reply:pansies and violas are very hardy and actually prefer cooler, moist conditions (they will not survive long in hot dry weather). In temperate climates they are often used as winter bedding/container plants: buy and plant some in early fall and you will get a burst of flowering in fall, a few flowers over winter and another burst of flowering in spring before the plants die. Of course you can plant them in Spring for summer flowering too but the fall planting gives you colour over a longer period.

It is normal for pansies to wither up and die during the hot summer months. They like cool (even cold) weather. Pull them up and plant petunias in their place. The petunias will last until a hard frost. When the petunias start looking puny, pull them up and plant more pansies.

Reply:Pansies are cool season plants. Plant them in the fall, and they go through the winter and die when it gets hot. If you still have pansies, they're way past their shelf life. They're cool season annuals. Go plant some warm season annuals- vinca, impatiens, petunias, dianthus, etc.

Pansies do best when its over 40 degrees, everything will freeze at 32 degrees so if you put pansies out during the daytime, bring them in or cover them at night so they don't get a hard frost or freeze. I've seen them survive a light snowfall but you should protect them.

In my area (zone 8 temps fall to 10°F) pansies are considered winter hardy. However, the low temp occurs just before sunrise, and is not usually sustained. Right now I have pansies planted in clay pots on my back deck. We have had 28° temps for two days with sleet and freezing rain. This will cause some damage, but I fully expect them to recover when this cold passes.

We plant them in late fall, and they remain low to the ground over the winter. They start blooming in early spring, continuing until it gets too hot for them.

Yes! It is best to do this with all plants.

Why? So, the plant will focus on putting out new growth and roots. It will not waste energy on the blooms that are on the plant. By doing this, you will benefit your new planting. Happy Gardening.

Reply:It's fine to do so; in fact, you might even be helping the plant to grow a bit. Removing flowers allows more nutrients to go to the plant itself, so that it has a chance to establish itself. Once you've removed the flowers initially, however, let the plant grow in its own way. After all, the flowers are the reason you grow them :-)

Check the soil they are in by pressing your finger into it gently. If the soil springs back and clings a little to your finger...then the soil is a good moisture level.

If your leaves look a little yellow or faded and limp then its because there is too much water.

Dry soil is very obvious the dirt will feel hard and crumbly, and plants kept in small places, like pots or window boxes will need more nutrient in the soil. I like a good mix of potting soil, a cup or so of peat moss and some good old fashioned cow manure.

I find my pansies do well out of direct sunlight with moderate water. semi shade should work okay for them. And if you are depending on the rain to water them make sure that there is nothing hanging over them that will sheild them from the rain...like a tree or a house eaves overhang... good luck. ^^

Reply:Most gardeners buy biennials as packs of young plants from the garden center and plant them directly into the garden soil. Gardeners interested in rarer cultivars can plant seeds indoors in early November for plants ready in the spring. Under good conditions, pansies and viola are perennial plants, although they are generally treated as annual or biennial plants because they get very leggy and overgrown after a few years. The mature plant grows to 9 inches (23 cm) high, and the flowers are two to three inches (about 6 cm) in diameter.

Pansies are hardy in zones 4-8. They can survive light freezes or a little snow, but not for very long. In warmer climates, zones 9-11, pansies can bloom over the winter, and are often planted in the fall. In these climates, pansies have been known to reseed themselves and come back the next year. Pansies are not very heat-tolerant - once the temperature gets over a certain point they will become leggy and stop blooming.

Pansies should be watered thoroughly about once a week, depending on climate and recent rainfall. For maximum bloom, they should be given flowering plant food about every other week, according to the plant food directions. Regular deadheading can extend the blooming period.

Diseases

Stem rot or pansy sickness

The plant may collapse without warning in the middle of season. The foliage will flag and lose color. Flowers will fade and shrivel prematurely. Stem will snap at the soil line if tugged slightly.

The plant is probably a total loss unless tufted.

Soil-borne fungus. Possible hazard with unsterilized animal manure.

Use Cheshunt or modern Benomyl fungicide prior to planting. Destroy (burn) infected plants.

Cheshunt recipe

2 parts finely ground copper sulphate 11 parts fresh ammonium carbonate

Mix thoroughly and stand for 2 hours in sealed container. Dissolve 1 ounce (28 g) in a little hot water and add this to 2 gallons of cold water and use immediately.

Rust

Puccinia aegra fungal infection. Yellow-brown spots on leaves and stem. Spray with Benomyl or Sulphide of Potassium (1 ounce to 2 1/2 gallons)

Leaf spot

Ramularia deflectens fungal infection. Dark spots on leaf margins followed by a white web covering the leaves. Associated with cool damp springs. Spray with fungicide.

Mildew

Oidium fungal infection. Violet-gray powder on fringes and underside of leaves. Caused by stagnant air. Can be limited but not necessarily eliminated by spraying (especially leaf undersides).

Cucumber mosaic virus

Transmitted by aphids. Fine yellow veining on young leaves, stunted growth, anomalous flowers. Virus can lay dormant, affect the entire plant and be passed to next generations and to other species. Prevention is key: purchase healthy plants, use ph-balanced soil which is neither too damp not too dry. Soil should have balanced amounts of nitrogen, phosphate, potash. Eliminate other diseases which may weaken the plant.

Pests

Slugs and snails

Lay sharp, gritty sand or top-dress soil with chipped bark. Clean area of leaves and foreign matter.

Aphids

Spray with diluted soft soap (2 ounce per gallon) Aphids are microscopic and lay eggs.

Cultivars

Pansy flowersThe Universal Plus series of 21 cultivars covers all the common pansy colors except orange and black.

I am looking for two different trees. A small tree, 10-20'for a 5x7' planting area between sidewalk and small wall.Evergreen, with flowers or without flowers, not messy.

A dwarf tree, 6-10' for a 3X3 area. Thin trunk, evergreen with some color.Branches to start at 3 or 4'.

I have seen some trees that I like but they are deciduous, Dwarf peach tree, Forest pansy...

Try a Crepe Myrtle for the larger spot. They come with white, pink or lilac colored flower clusters that look like large lilacs. They are gorgeous and easy. You can also try Japanese Maples and all varieties of citrus. Your best bet is to ask for advice at your local nursery.

how should a snapdragon be placed, or an orchid or a daffodil. There has to be a best way for a flower to be placed. So far I have only had luck with single layer flowers like pansy, hydrangea, greenery. I am making some pressed flower greeting cards so silica gell would not work for me. The flowers have to be flat but still recogizable.

I had to press plants for horticultural assignments and found that some of the more moist stemmed plants just did not turn out.

I found successful display by carefully cutting all foliage of the back of the item (otherwise the leaves etc become too crowded after pressing).

Be very careful how you put the top layer onto sample, otherwise you find the leaves etc bent back the wrong way later and you can't pull them back after they have dried.

The more time you spend on the sample with trimming and careful laying out the better your results.

I used the white wood glue to stick mine to paper as it dries clear. Only use as much as you need though as it dries shiny. The trick is to lay sample face down on paper towel (after sample has been pressed and is completely dry). lightly paint the back with wood glue with a small flat paint brush (don't go overboard) and then carefully place on paper the right way up and dry of any excess glue with another piece of paper towel. Do a few trials to get your technique right - to much glue can make paper 'ripple'. I don't know if the flowers you mentioned can be successfully pressed. Good luck.

Reply:Agreed. libs don't instigate conflict like cons do. Cons tend to be blood thirsty and macho, where a libs tend to be more reasonable. And since a shadow of the bush administration orchestrated the 9/11 attacks for an excuse to instigate conflict in the middle east, it makes total sense that there has not been a terrorist attack in the U.S. since. Reply:Wrong. A liberal president would continue the war on terror through covert means (remember the Cold War?) and use the CIA to eliminate terrorists. This is much more effective (and less expensive) than invading foreign countries arbitrarily with massive armies. He or she would also use diplomacy to work things out - something Bush knows nothing about. A liberal being made president would make the world relax and breathe a sigh of relief and we might actually be able to get other countries to be friendly with us for a change. Plus, a liberal president might *gasp* focus on our problems at home. Wouldn't that be something?
Reply:I agree with you on some things but I think President Bush has been lucky on no attacks on the home front because some things he has not been resolute on (remember even Reagan failed with Lebanon by cutting and running something the terrorist still cheer). I think the danger I see is the Democrats being in charge in Congress still with a new Republican president because obviously this democrat leadership is what you call the run and hide liberals who would rather deal with terrorists through the UN, police actions and sanctions.

A true Liberal President would shut down the Pentagon and disband the armed forces, because true Liberals despise the military. A true Liberal would try to talk with the terrorists and find out why they hate us, instead of killing them and moving on. (the reason they hate us is three-fold: 1 - we are different from them; 2 - they have been trained to hate us by their parents and so-called "teachers" since the day they were born, becasue we are different from them; 3 - they are religious fanatics who concentrate on one specific verse in the Qu'ran that says "kill the infidels").

Check facts dude - Tennessee tried to set up a program with Michigan back in 2004 that would have gone into effect this season. UT was willing to do a 4 year agreement to open their season against Michigan, with each team traveling to the other stadium in alternating years. Michigan declined, which is when Tennessee set the program with UCLA.

There are SEC schools that try to work programs with the Big 10, and they usually get turned down. The only exception was when Michigan paid Vandy $50,000 to come play there two years ago - it's funny that Michigan wouldn't agree to come to Nashville.

Reply:Well when is the Big 10 going to be willing to play real man football? When is the Big 10 going to be willing to SCHEDULE games in DEC? Before you complain about the SEC and try to ask these questions better keep it in perspective of the truth. Even the Big East plays a couple games when other teams are holding Championship games, that way they stay in the voters minds instead of backing in like OSU.

Reply:Can't....All BIG 10 schools are division 2A. It doesn't look good when your whole schedule is full of 2A schools or schools that should be 2A. Check out the Ohio St. schedule for next year, I see one legitimate BCS bowl bound division 1A school there......then check Georgias schedule........Yeeaaa...that's what I thought.

Edit: As 4 your cold weather, we would love to play in that weather. Unfortunately we have to practice in 100 degree heat all summer so that ice cold weather would be a welcome change. You have know idea what your talking about do you ???

Why is Captain Archer such a pansy?

I'm watching Season 4 Episode 1: Storm Front. Archer finds an alien helping the Nazis and tries to interrogate him, but not very vigorously. Archer repeatedly opens himself to attack by turning his back to the alien. He asks a few questions, takes an alien communicator and then leaves. Archer doesn't even bother to execute the alien, despite the risk of the alien warning his compatriots. Instead, his mob buddy shoots the alien several times like they almost forgot something and leaves the body in plain view.

How hard is it, Archer? Put your loaded weapon to the alien's temple and pull the trigger. Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway would not have hesitated.

Why is Captain Archer such a pansy?
I think by this point the writers on Enterprise had well and truely given up! Just showing T'Pol's backside and hoping no-one would notice the rest...

It could've been a really good series but they didn't really try.

that golfer dude quit cuz he had shin splints... ok i golf.. it aint hard to walk with shin splints... nfl players get touched they have to sit out the game.. it ridiculous.. i played high school sports and you get yelled at if you got tapped and wanted to come out.. and you wouldnt get put back in until you prove yourself again... its just stupid
