Ugg anyone decorated a flower pot?

Ok I am making my Mom and Mom in law a pot with mixed plants I am using ivy, pansies, geraniums and i the center a spikie like Rhea. My ? is I want to take picutres of my daughters and glue to the pot decorate the pot wiht snap shots and then a gloss sill on it. Any suggestions.

Ugg anyone decorated a flower pot?
My suggestion is to plant the plants in normal pots, then buy a bigger pot, (in terracotta or acrylic-painted metal, no texture to the surface), to decopupage the pictures on. Pictures will not stay stuck to a pot that gets wet!

Rough up the surface of the outer pot a little with some sand paper. Get high quality copies of your photos made: either print them yourself on regular copy paper or have copes done at a copy shop. Photo paper does not decoupage well.

With a paint brush, apply decoupage medium to the pot where you would like the photo to go, then carefully lay the photo over that spot and gently rub to remove air bubbles. Apply another coat of medium over the photo. Repeat as desired.

You can get the decoupage medium at a craft store, as well as disposable foam brushes. If you want to totally cover the pot with images, use photos AND copies of your children's art work. Your mother and mother in law will LOVE it!
Reply:If you want illustrations acrylic paints are good but expensive and are almost impossible to remove

How do you recommend planting ice pansys and marigolds?

I would like to know if I planted the pansies in the right spot. I planted them where it is shady in the morning until around 1-2p.m. and then sunny until around 5-7 sometime in that area? also do you recommend putting marigold in side on a patio with window that open?

How do you recommend planting ice pansys and marigolds?
i am planting pansies and marigolds for many years.

the location u told is ideal for pansies.

but for marigolds, i don't think its good idea to plant them at that location.... cause they need full sun to thrive.... and they really don't have a very good smell.

marigolds r planted in my gardens to keep the mosquitoes away b/c of its smell.
Reply:I planted ice pansies in front of my house last year, which gets afternoon/ evening sun. They did so well that they lasted all winter and are still alive now (and they've multiplied). I think the marigolds should do well too as long as they get plenty of sun. (I live in Ohio.)
Reply:Pansy's are pretty hardy and survive anything. I think where you have them planted is fine. The marigolds are really an outside type of plant. They don't need to be inside but if the window is open they should be o.k. but remember they too want alot of sun.
Reply:Pansies and marigolds are good in partial sun or full sun, I have planted both and have a lot of trees in my yard, I just pick out the most sunny spot and they do great, no need to worry they are both great plants and easy to grow for border or flower boxes. Good Luck!!
Reply:The area for the pansies seem OK but I don't think you want to plant marigolds inside because of the aroma that exude from this plant. marigolds love the sun and tends to keep some insects away as well because of it's pungent aroma.
Reply:I don't know much about panseys, as I lack in gardening skills; however, because of my lack of skills, I love marigolds because they thrive everywhere and every time I have ever planted them. I have lived in many different regions in Canada. The only thing I would say about having them near a window that opens, is that marigolds have a strong smell to them, which is not a nice flowery smell, but a very distinct smell that I wouldn't like inside my house. You may get this smell coming into your home through the open window. Hope that helps you in some way!

What is this poem "Nocturne In A Deserted Brickyard" about?

Nocturne In A Deserted Brickyard

by Carl Sandburg

Stuff of the moon

Runs on the lapping sand

Out to the longest shadows.

Under the curving willows,

And round the creep of the wave line,

Fluxions of yellow and dusk on the waters

Make a wide dreaming pansy of an old pond in the night.

I love this poem and keep rereading it and still cannot see what it is about or what Carl meant by the words. Any ideas?

What is this poem "Nocturne In A Deserted Brickyard" about?
I'm glad you like Sandburg's poem. He's an interesting poet, usually easy to understand. But, I agree, this poem is a bit puzzling.

Start by asking yourself, "What is the 'stuff of the moon'?" That's the key. Wouldn't it be moonlight? Apparently the speaker is standing near a body of water. If so, you can see how, to one's eye, the moonlight "runs on the sand" of the beach. Of course, the light then would go "out to the longest shadows" and perhaps "under the curving willows" and even around where the waves of water are creeping up on the shore -- maybe the tide coming in.

"Fluxions" is a mathematical term: it refers to "the infinitely small increase or decrease of flowing in a certain infinitely small period of time"; that is, tiny, tiny movements that one can hardly perceive but that. over time, one can see have taken place. In this poem it would refer to the change in the moonlight ("yellow and dusk") on the waves of water.

What the moonlight does is to make the "old pond" visible in the dark at night. With the only metaphor in the poem, Sandburg compares this visible pond under the moonlight to a "wide dreaming pansy," in other words a large flower with pale variations of color that has a kind of mystical or "dreaming" air about it.

What makes the poem problematical to me is what kind of body of water the speaker is looking upon. If it's simply a pond, it might well have willow trees growing by it, but it would be less likely to have a sandy beach or waves that make a lapping movement. If, on the other hand, he's talking about the ocean, it would be less likely to have willow trees; and calling it an "old pond" would be a peculiar familiarity that diminishes its size and power.

To me, this may simply be a flaw in the poem. But one might argue that Sandburg is playing with the word "fluxions," a mathematical concept of Isaac Newton's, which might make the tiny movements of even an old pond seem like the tide of an ocean--in constant motion that would be so infinitely small that it might seem invisible to the eye.

I hope this helps -- and doesn't disturb your affection for the poem. It reminds me of a pond we had on our farm when I was growing up. If you looked at it under the moonlight, it would gleam white, silver, almost gold and be as beautiful as a blossom.

What is eating the flowers on my pansies?

Almost certainly slugs or snails.

What is eating the flowers on my pansies?
might be bunny, or neighbor they are edible and people put them on salads to add splash of color
Reply:I am.
Reply:strangely enough I've seen cats do that.
Reply:Deer or rabbits. Is it a clean cut?
Reply:If you cant see snails, try shining a torch on them at night as nocturnal insects eg grasshoppers might be feeding on them then.

How is manchester united a bigger and better club than ac milan?

i've been hearing those little annoying man utd fans saying that manchester united is a bigger and better club than ac milan will ever be. i was laughing so hard when those losers said that hahaha. how about i tell you how ac milan is a bigger and better club than man utd.

ac milan has 7 european trophies and 17 italian cups. little man utd has 2 european trophies and 16 english cups. so this tells all of you man utd pansies that ac milan is a bigger and better club than man utd will ever be.

and they really showed it in the champions league semi final where they creamed them 3:0 and left man utd and their fans to cry and suck on their thumbs.

Forza Milan.

How is manchester united a bigger and better club than ac milan?
Yes, that's right. Milan were, are and will always be the best team in the world!

FORZA MILAN!
Reply:manchester united sucks. its not better than ac milan

manchester united is not better than any team haha
Reply:You forgot to mention that each won of those wins that Milan has is a direct result of CHEATING.
Reply:Well Man U. does have more fans in the world which I could care less about but in truth Milan has been way more successful. I wouldn't even care if they hadn't I'd like em over United anyway anyday.
Reply:although man united have a bigger fan club than milan, they still suck..... milan is always and forever will be better than man united
Reply:its big jokes ...
Reply:oh my god what r u saying. r u gone mad or somethig man united r like the best team ever. your a twat if u think that ac millan are the best. but still they are good but not as good as man u. man u is th best!!!
Reply:I support both, but when they collide,I think Manchester United have the edge over milan.I think they lost last season because they were not playing thier nomal gamewhile Milan played with perfect passing.I think the players from milan will not do so good this season as over 50% of thier players have passed the age of 32.they beginig to show some signs of ageing.(against celtic and in Italy.)

I hope my answer is reasonable =)
Reply:Don't worry some of them are just jealous we all know AC Milan is the best team in the world and they should remember the beating they got from Milan last season.
Reply:has milan actully got a decent league title fight under there current manager?

by winning the champions league dont make you the ebst team,if u win the league and european cup then u will be for a season.

shame milan are nothing compared to real madird.
Reply:AC Milan is absolutely better than Man Utd. Milan always wins and is in finals of the Championship League. This is something that Man Utd and Alex Ferguson can only dream of.

AC Milan has Kaka, who's arguably the best soccer player in the world right now. Needless to say he's better than Christiano Ronaldo, who cannot lead his team like Kaka leading AC Milan.

Although they are tripping over some hurdles this season (just like last year, they had a slow start and a year of ups and downs and still came all the way back to win the Championship League), I believe they will win it again this year. Every team has its down times. However, AC Milan still rules Europe when they are not at their best. That means they are the best in Europe, not just better than the Man Utd.
Reply:dont want to burst your bubble but Manchester United is bigger than Milan when considering a bigger fanbase world wide and financially

but from a success point of view , yes Milan is bigger and has been the most dominant team in European football for the last 20 years
Reply:Something else to consider in this little equation:

The EPL, which is one of Man U's pride and joys, was only founded in 1992. It's pretty damn impressive to say that the club has won 9 titles since the beginning. AC Milan has had the opportunity to dominate a specific title for over 20 years.
Reply:It's not better, but it has a larger fan base worldwide and a slightly larger bank account. As soon as people start following or playing soccer they just seem to go for Man U because their friend did.

Im not making sense but in conclusion Man U is bigger because of it's fanbase but AC Milan is certainly better.

Also, Man U would have absolutely zero chance of winning a Serie A title but Milan are usually right up near the top if not at the top.

FORZA MILAN
Reply:Kelimation Typical Man Utd fans responce football only started in 1992 when they renamed the First Division to the Premier League.

If i remember correctly English League system has been going since the late 1800's its the oldest in the world.

Oh and one of Englands younger teams LFC is Englands most successful 18 Leagues and 5 European Cups

Why do my coworkers keep calling me "fruit" and "pansy"?

Is it because I'm a pretty boy?

I feel like shaving my head right about now.

Why do my coworkers keep calling me "fruit" and "pansy"?
Cause they are a@sholes that are trying to start a fight. Just ignore them. If they continue, go to your boss. What they are doing IS a form of harassment.
Reply:You could probably report them for creating a hostile workplace environment.
Reply:Maybe they want a sexual harrassment charge against their a**es. I'd file a harrassment report if I were you. The world is flooded with haters.
Reply:Do you act effeminate? It may be because they are jealous of your looks also. But report them to the boss, this is unacceptable workplace behaviour.
Reply:They are ignorant and immature to say the least.

I would let your employer know that there is sexual harassment in the work place. I wouldn't mention any names unless the boss insists. If it continues then give their names or file a formal complaint against them. It is against the law and laws only work if we use them.

Even if you are a "Pretty Boy" , or even if you are Gay, they are breaking the law by harassing you.
Reply:Some good advice here from the others. Remember this: Your coworkers will continue to pick on you as long as you LET them. Stand up for yourself, involve your boss, and this should stop.
Reply:I would report them. You are there to work, not be harassed by a bunch of ignorant idiots. If your immediate supervisor wont do anything, go over their head and speak to a higher up. You dont have to put up with that kind of treatment from ANYONE.
Reply:Sounds like they are jerks. Say something to your supervisor...sexual harassment is sexual harassment And, bald is sexy :D
Reply:Ignore them
Reply:Who cares if you're a pretty boy. So if you're gay you're automatically a whimp or whatever. It's so stupid. Don't let them bother you, and if it does, you can take legal action and they can get fired.

One more time. Looking for flowers sold in a box with seeds, sand, fertilizer etc. Just the name of the maker

Found them at walmart last year, they had pansy's, zinnia's, marigold's, cosmos. About $7 a box and they work great. I could order online if I could just get the name of the company that makes them!

I bought a couple of those big seed boxes at Walmart a couple of days ago. One from Plantation Products, and one from American Seed. Both of them are from Norton, MA. Hopes this helps!

How did Nietzsche view the impoverished?

How did he expect extremely poor people to exercise their will to power if they don't have the capabilities/resources.

By the way, I'm talking African or South-East Asian poverty, not pansy American poverty.

How did Nietzsche view the impoverished?
Christianity teaches a love for the poor and weak. Nietzche preached self reliance and improvement. I could not find a direct quote on the poor. Yet, you could use this quote "Two great European narcotics: alcohol and Christianity," to deduce a dislike for the poor. He gets a bad rap because his views were twisted for Nazi propaganda. I would say he expected more from his fellow man.
Reply:well, i think you are using the term 'impoverished' not in a moral or judgemental manner, but strictly from a financial perspective.

with that assumption, in some ways, Nietzsche might view the poverty of Africa and South East Asia as a necessary precondition for future greatness.
Reply:I think his point was that if their will to power was strong enough they would get out of poverty. If they did not then they deserved it. He would say that we shouldn't feel bad for people like that who are weaker then us. He would probably say that Christianity makes up try to help them when they do not deserve it. I do not share the view compleatly but that would be his take on it as far as my know of Nietzsche goes.

How do I care for Pansies? How much sun do they need?

Pansies pretty much grow anywhere...but they do like sun. I have mine all around the outside of my house...some get more sun than others...but they all thrive.

If you get the smaller violas...beware...they will multiple over the years. I now have them everywhere...and I only planted them 2 years ago.

Good luck with your gardening.

How do I care for Pansies? How much sun do they need?
Just make sure the dirt doesn't get dry and they get a lot of sun. They are pretty simple to care for and very pretty!

Pansies as indoor plants?

It's gotten cold outside and I want to bring these plants indoors. They're pansies from a local nursery. What do I have to do to keep them growing and healthy? Thanks for the advice.

Pansies as indoor plants?
I live in Missouri and I've never had a bit of luck wintering them over even with bringing them indoors and using timed gro-lights. I have a pretty good green thumb but maybe I'm just unlucky with pansys, (which I love). :(

Never say die, though! I've been told it's impossible to winter petunias or start certain plants from seed. I accomplished both. Sometimes staying uninformed enough to know something is "impossible" is a good thing! :D
Reply:It sounds has if you live in a cold winter country?? I'm in Queensland Australia and our winters are mild our pansy plants do okay here. You might just have to treat them as annuals and buy new plants next Spring. They do make a great show.

Vicki R
Reply:leave them out side they Can handle cold and even bloom all winter long
Reply:if you are able to create a mini greenhouse that will keep your plants warm enough and receive exposure to the sun that would be the ticket. a terrarium would be ideal. but remember that humidity is also involved. that would come from keeping the plants watered and warm.

What is the maximum lifespan of a Pansy?

My plant is a "Giant Supreme" pansy, of a deep purple/indigo variety - it has lasted so far 8 months of continuous flowering, and now has 28 heads on average at one time - it's HUGE!

It has never been allowed for it to even have one flower go to seed - and have taken 2 successful cuttings from it

When should I take the final cuttings (southern hemisphere - going into winter here) - and then the seeds, before it dies? I'm too scared to let even one head go to seed lest the plant stop trying to propogate itself naturally and stop producing flowers.

I understand under certain conditions this plant can be a short lived perrenial rather than a strict annual

What is the maximum lifespan of a Pansy?
I can see why you wouldn't want to cut it down. However, you should let it go to seed. Then you would get the pleasure of growing another one. 8 months is a long time to have flowers it must be a beautiful plant. I love flowers myself, but I have no idea of how long this one would last. Sorry, I can't help you.
Reply:Plants grow well in sunny or partially sunny positions in well draining soils. Pansies are developed from viola species that are normally biennials with a two-year life cycle.

Should I be concerned about my annuals cause it's gonna get cold tonight?

It's suppose to go down to the low 30s and I'm worried that my flowers will die. I have just planted marigolds, pansies, etc. outside. Will they be okay?

Should I be concerned about my annuals cause it's gonna get cold tonight?
Are they close to a house or under the protection of a tree or something? That would help but if the temps get down cold enough it could be bad. I wonder if covering them would be out of the question? If it is clear out and no wind you might have frost and that can be prevented by covering them but you want to uncover them tomorrow morning so they don't get too hot. Best of luck....hopefully the temp will stay about 32-degrees.
Reply:Cover them, they should be o.k.

I bought 3 tulip plants from store can I plant them in my garden?

This is my 1st. time gardening I live in Arkansas. my plants are full grown and I have an empty flower bed I bought 3 tulip plants,1 flat of dianthus?, some petunia's,pansies, potting soil and cypress mulch. can anyone help please!!!

I bought 3 tulip plants from store can I plant them in my garden?
yes, anytime the soil is workable
Reply:yes i believe u can:)
Reply:Yes, it is warm enough now. Mix the potting soil with the regular soil and start planting then water to seal them or to make sure the dirt seals around the roots and bulb. Basic the same for your other flowers. Dont plant to deeply or cover to deeply with mulch.
Reply:why not
Reply:Yes, If you want them to bloom next year, do not cut back the foilage until it turns brown.
Reply:You can check your hardiness zone here:

http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/hzm-sm...

(depending upon where you live in Arkansas, you'll be in zone 6, 7, or 8).

Then check the plant tags to see when it is suggested for putting them in the ground in your zone. Usually the tag will give you a range of dates. If you're within those dates and there's no chance of frost, you'll be fine planting them in the ground.

Could Polar Bears live in Antartica and eat Penguins?

Would be it be ethical? Would the penguins desert their egg?

Are Elephant Seals too much much for pansy northern bears?

Could Polar Bears live in Antartica and eat Penguins?
Introducing Polar bears to Antartic would be an environmental catastophe and would throw the whole eco-system out of balance. Probably.
Reply:(1.) No!!! (2.) Yes. (3.) I have seen footage of a polar bear killing a walrus its own size, so an elephant seal would be easy prey.
Reply:It is doubtful. There have been a few that have thought about. Most biologist would not be in favor of such a plan. I would not.

Penguins already have enough trouble existing day to day, why add another predator.

Polar bears can not catch and kill large adult seals.

Remember Antarctica is a whole different ecosystem that the Arctic. There is only one prominent resident, the emperor penguin.
Reply:Seals and penguins would be devastated. A polar bear could take on either one of those as it's diet already is ringed seals and bearded seals. But it would throw the whole eco system out of whack, seals and Penguins could become endangered, then theres the killer wales not getting enough food, not to mention the polar bears breeding.. I'm sure it's possible, but not logical.
Reply:Would you put up with a girl with the body of a polar bear who harps on you every bloody day, when meanwhile, you stay fit, look for work each and every day, have to deal with an insane father who can't stop screaming at 6 am? I certainly wouldn't.

Does this make me a pansy???! help me my life is spinning outta control!!?

Ok so the other day me and my girl friend were walking down the street and this drunk gay guy yells at me and tells me to get outta the way or hes gonna freakin beath the living day lights out of me..i didnt say nothing i just complied with his orders...but my GF didnt she started swearing at him and they were going back and forth but I did nothin but stand in the back like a dog with his tail between his legs. my gf then turned to me and said "arent you gonna say anything", but i acted like i couldnt hear her. Then again my GF is pretty intimidating she is 6'3 im like 5'5 and the drunk was like my height and really skinny but pretty feisty..So what im trying to ask is Does this make me a pansy? Do i loose my man Card!? ive been sleepless for the past week and a half and i dont knw where else to turn plz help and be honest!

Does this make me a pansy???! help me my life is spinning outta control!!?
i wouldnt worry about it unless your girlfriend is really kicking up a fuss about you not backing her up but to be honest there is not much point in starting an arguement with someone drunk because it leads no where but a fight. X
Reply:Its normally best not to bother the drunk homeless but since your gf initiated an arguement maybe you should have said something... might have to do something else to become higher in her eyes.. pay a guy to hit on her then *beat him up*
Reply:It means you were frightened and unwilling to react to violent behavior. It's not abnormal, not bad, you just felt a physical and emotional reaction to your fear, which is to be expected. Accept it and be honest with yourself about it and you can move on.

You obviously are not happy with how you reacted this time, but take a minute to consider if you would really prefer to do have done something different. Would you have "stood up to him" and started being violent or belligerent like some angry monkey? Would you prefer to have done more to avoid the situation like leaving the area more quickly? Would you rather have done something else like reason with him, ask him to explain his behavior?

Any of these could have been other options; think for yourself and determine what you would rather have done, then accept that instead you experienced something else, reacted differently and give yourself a break about it. It's not that big a deal and if your girlfriend disagrees you can ask her why she felt the need to get so upset and act how she did (I kind of wonder what her issue is, honestly).

Once you can do that, maybe you could seriously consider what you would rather do if such a situation comes up again. And I mean honestly what you personally want to do if something like this comes up again, not what you think our culture expects you to do, not what you think society or your girlfriend wants. What *you* honestly would prefer to do in that situation that upholds the things you value.

That or buy a gun and start killing innocent bystanders while firing shots at unhappy people who just happened to have shouted idiotic things at you for no good reason. That's an option too, but that would be the most stupid one to choose.
Reply:AHAHAHAHHAHAAH what a JOKE u ppl need to read the rest of his questions ahahha well in this one i think ur being serrous but yeah you lost ur man card and dignity you should of stood up to your girl and said why fight a dumb drunk its stupid but since u didnt ur pretty much a homo like ur brothers son cousing whatever lol she is to much woman for ur ***

Are pansies annuals or perennials?

Looking to add them to my flower garden. If they don't come back next year is there a similar looking flower that will?

Are pansies annuals or perennials?
generally t hey are annuals. However there is a new strain called "Icicle pansies" that do overwinter.

I have some in my garden right now.

I enjoyed their fall bloom. ( actually even got them at a reduced price at the end of last season but still had a few weeks of colour.)

Now they are blooming their little heads off and have been doing it for almost a month I think.

They look foor gorgeous.
Reply:Pansies, like most species of *Viola* are perennials. They don't live very long usually, but more than a year. That is if you give them the right conditions. They need good moist soil. Maybe sun, maybe shade. It depends on where you live.

I'm at 4200 feet and grow pansies in the shade during summer, and in full sun in the winter. I;ve had them bloom thru the snow.

But, generally in the flower biz they are teated like annuals. They often bloom and get looking scraggaly. Especially in summer. So they get replanted.

They will also reseed and continue making new plants on thier own.

The newer hybrids of *Viola cornuta* are hardier and longer lasting than the old pansies, *V. whitrockianna*. The flowers are a little smaller but the plants are stronger.

There are lots of plants that can do the same visual thing in the garden. But knowing where you live (the climate zone) and where you are planting. The soil too. Lots of variables.

Just buy the pretty things and plant them. And keep going to the nursery and asking questions.
Reply:Pansies are usually annuals...they like spring and fall like temeratures. Cool nights and warm days.

Viola's are pansies and are the most hardiest. Most gardening folks will plant pansies in early spring which will provide color until early summer. THe hot summertime temps will make them look leggy and ugly. Remove them and replace with hot weather plants.
Reply:there re 2 types - annuals and perennial. perennial have much smaller flowers (at least where i live). and where i live they just grow in the forest - have very small flowers

by the way, just to add about pansies - they grow everywhere - in the sun and in shade, they tolerate low temperatures and even some frost, so if u live in northern country u may plant them the first even if there is a risk of night frost
Reply:It all depends on your climate.Try Johnny Jump-Ups. They belong to the Pansy family but are a perennial that will self seed its self and come back every year. They can be invasive and will bloom all summer long, just pinch off dead flowers this will help with the spreading as well. They are cute and I grow them in the border of my garden and they will pretty much grow anywhere. Happy gardening and good luck
Reply:Unfortunately, they're annuals--I just planted 2 flats, and i'll have to do it again next year.
Reply:annuals which self seed in warmer zones.
Reply:Pansies are an annual. They must have sunlight. I don't know of a similiar flower.

The guitar "pansy" from MCR Frank Iero. What kid of guitar is it??
Guitar World interviewed Frank right after the release of The Black Parade, My Chemical Romance's latest album. The guitarist told us the following:

"Live, I love playing Gibson Les Pauls, but for The Black Parade I used a sunburst Epiphone SG G-400. The one I used actually got broken in three pieces at a show just before we started recording the album, but our guitar tech fixed it up better than new and it sounded great. I also used an Epiphone Elite Les Paul on a few tracks

"Our secret weapon, however, was one of those Roland guitar synthesizers—I think it was the GS-1. We found a setting that was maybe three octaves below the fundamental pitch, and it produced an incredible subsonic growl that we put beneath the really heavy single-note guitar harmony sections. You can hear it on 'Mama' and 'This is How I Disappear,' and it's on 'The End' a little, too."
Reply:Not sure BUT

Is Conscientious Objector a FRENCH term that means scared LIBERAL pansy?

Here they are assaulting the USA again! These LIB Brown Shirts have ZERO class!

"A mob of Seattle Central Community College students chased military recruiters off campus last month, after a tense confrontation. Now a student anti-war group is stepping up efforts to keep them out for good.

The students hurled insults and water bottles, according to witnesses, forcing the recruiters to flee under the protection of campus security officers."

Is this LIBERALS being patriotic?

Is Conscientious Objector a FRENCH term that means scared LIBERAL pansy?
How patriotic is it to ask me to get shot up for an ever changing story?

Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Let's change the Constitution to mandate that the children of Congressman must serve in active status. Then you might be surprised at how our interest in using our military to solve the world's problems drops.
Reply:Sounds to me like someone needs to drink less coffee and do something positive with her life than look to stir up more hatred in her country.

Americans are so terribly polarized by the mess they are in on so many levels. Do you really think such questions and name calling and insults will help the situation any?

Personally I think it is good to see people standing up against the destructive inhuman strategies of the American military. And no,I am not a lib or a rep, just someone who has eyes to see. Eyes and mind not suckered into the propagandized views promoted by the government run media. Eyes that do NOT hate but see with compassion how frightened people like you are to be in the state you are in now.

I am sure under normal circumstances you are a very nice lady, but your question reeks of hatred.... the very hatred that your government wants you to have. The very hatred that will consume you so much that you, the american people, will continue to subdivide and subdivide so you are easy pickins.

United you stand, divided you fall. Keep sniping at your liberals... liberals keep sniping at your republicans... this is what they want! They want you divided and arguing, it keeps you away from discovering the truth of your situation... and baby it is pretty bad from where I stand. Not that mine is much better... we are all in this crud together.

So please...... Look past the labels... realize that the democrats and republicans are ALL ONE AND THE SAME.

“The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then.” Thomas Jefferson on Dissent:

"There is no difference between the two parties. They are both Globalists, with Big Business interests, not American interests. We need Statesmen who look to the future, not Politicians who look to the hand that feeds them." ~ Donna Voetee

There is not a dime of difference between the Democrats and the Republicans. ~ FDR

Please stop the bickering Americans. See who your common enemy is and move on it. As for those students, you may not approve, but if you saw how these recruiters even go after the mentally handicapped, you might understand. Their job is to lie, lie, lie, to get bodies for their bosses.

And those bosses do NOT have good things in store for you. I wonder why those darlings of America, the Bush brats, Satanists like their parents, are not enlisted. Certainly it would be better for them than the lives of overindulgence and precociousness they now lead. I am sure Cheney's son.. oh.. daughter? would be a wonderful soldier. How about the children of other prominent Americans? It is a class thing.

Besides .. water bottles and insults never really mutilated genetic structure or killed people did they?

The French helped us win our independence.

After an American victory at Saratoga in 1777, France, with Spain and the Netherlands as its allies, entered the war against Britain. French involvement proved decisive, with a French naval victory in the Chesapeake leading to the surrender of a British army at Yorktown in 1781.

Now go back to eating your "freedom" fries.

You wouldn't hurl insults at people for something you would NEVER do, would you? Of course not, because that would make you a hypocrite. I should let you get going since you're so brave on Internet.
Reply:Another Republican CHICKEN HAWK. This one seemed to have used to much Peroxide.

Even after I got out of the Navy I had recruiters stalking me, Army and Marines. I couldn't even have a beer in peace at a tavern some days. For 2 years this went on and it pissed me off.

So bleach your hair again and join Bush and company as a trusted friend and ally. I'm sure they could use another CHICKEN HAWK.

p.s When you think watching people die through your scope is something you can live with for the rest of your life, it's time for you to reassess your own life and not those of others that have a conscience.
Reply:No, CO is a legal term for people, such as Friends and (some) Buddhists who have a scruple about killing people.

College campuses have always been hotbeds of opposition to military recruiting. In part, that results from universities' diversity policies, which proscribe discrimination against women, gays, and other suspect classifications.

So far as the military discrimination against women, consider the fact that the Regiment of Military Police is more than 35% female, MPs are trained as infantry-plus, and they are used as infantry in the urban environment, but they do not receive hazard pay and they do not receive the CIB (and the CAB does not carry the cash/promotion/decoration status of the CIB).

And of course, 'don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue' is a joke. Though I continue to counsel IRR personnel who are being reactivated that the surest way to NOT be sent to Iraq is to make a pass at their first sergeant. Granted, they may lose a tooth or two, but that's a whole lot better than the clusterjoy waiting for them in Iraq.
Reply:To Liberal the term patriotic means to surrender. The victims in their mind is the evil doer. they just need a hug ohhhhhhhhhh isn't that a shame. The left and french are one and the same cowards.
Reply:What's your definition of patriotic? Is it finding Osama bin Laden? Or picking up a weapon in defense of your nation? You talk the talk, but so far, I see no walking.
Reply:Lets not confuse liberals with "conscientious objector".

Traditionally, conscientious objectors are members of very strict religious denominations that prohibit killing, even in war. When drafted, such people often perfrom their military service in a non-combat capacity, such as medics, supply people, etc. often in combat zones.

In the absence of a draft, the term is moot.

Liberals, on the other hand, are self absorbed nutcases who lack any sort of strong religious beliefs and reject the idea of objective morality, and anything else that gets in the way of them having a good time.
Reply:Yes, but....

.. there are some who are true conscientious objectors such as SGT Alvin York of WWII. He held a deep religious belief that killing was wrong. He was sent to the battle anyway, where he realized that killing the enemy meant saving the lives of his fellow soldiers and unarmed civilians in concentration camps. His superior marksmanship and bravery led to his capture of an entire company of German soldiers by himself.

The anti-war, "anti-violence" crowd you describe turn out to be a little more violent than their chants, huh? And it was the recruiters who demonstrated non-violence and patience. I'm afraid I would not have been as accomodating.

I personally invite them (these Anti American protestors) to move to France or Iran, since they obviously do not care for the protection and rights the US military gives them.
Reply:Hopefully, the recruiters will regroup and head off to Yale and Harvard, instead of this community college.
Reply:So you equate anyone who is against people recruiting for the military as a liberal?

Don't show any biases there do you?

Why don't you talk to Chuck Hagel?
Reply:No, it could be Quaker Religious person or from another religion that objects to war. It could mean that someone just simply doesn't like war. I don't agree with them but they have the right to their opinion.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

Edward Abbey, Patriotism quotes:

A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.

Dwight D. Eisenhower, Patriotism quotes:

Here in America we are descended in spirit from revolutionaries and rebels -- men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine.

Thomas Jefferson, Patriotism quotes:

God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ... And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.

How long will my potted flowers from summer last?

I am a brand new gardner this year, and I potted several flowers (seed and blooming) this summer. I knew nothing about gardening, but my flowers have done pretty well this year and bloomed well. We live in Colorado Springs and I am curious as to how long I should expect them to live. It is already getting cold at night here, but I don't know which ones, if any, I should bother bringing inside. I planted pansies, marigolds, petunias, geraniums, and several variations of daisies. Do any of these bloom again or are they pretty much a "one-time" kinda thing? And if they do bloom again, is it a decent regrowth or are you better off just calling it a loss and planting again next year? I also have herbs outside I dont know what to do with...sage, basil, chives, rosemary, oregano and thyme. Help! What should I do?

How long will my potted flowers from summer last?
All the flowers you mention are annuals, which mean they will only last through this season, so it is not worth bringing them inside - they may last a couple more weeks if the weather holds.

Here's a link that will give you some tips for putting the garden to 'bed' for the winter:

http://www.sheridannurseries.com/GardenS...
Reply:pansies, marigolds, petunias, geraniums, and some variations of daisies are annuals, they will last through one or two frosts. Pansies like cooler weather so they may last longer then your others. The marigolds may possibly reseed them selves mine always did.

Some of your herbs may come back on their own next year.

Next year you might want to consider using perennials so that they will come back the following year and all you will have to do them will be cover them at the end of the year. and It saves you money on not having to buy annuals each year.

You can also create yourself a small inside herb garden for your kitchen. Just plant your herbs in a pot and keep in front of a lighted window.

I planted annuals for many years in a row but with the prices of the annuals getting higher each year I finally decided i was throwing away money and plant all perennials now. Some times I will fill in with a few annuals just for a change of scenery.
Reply:PANSIES, MARIGOLDS, PETUNIAS, GERANIUMS, AND DAISIES ALL COME BACK NEXT YEAR SO, NOT TO FREAT. DIG UP YOUR HERBS AND POT THEM FOR INSIDE PLANTS UNTILL THE WHEATHER GETS WARM AGAIN, PLANT THEM BACK OUT SIDE AGAIN!

Where can I find a list of the most popular domestic (garden) plants?

for instance, I'm sure tomatoes would be on the list, so would roses, pansies, cabbage... I'm interested in knowing which are the most popular - both vegetable and ornamental

Where can I find a list of the most popular domestic (garden) plants?
You are best to give your local garden center a ring. There will always be the old standards like roses but gardens are similar to fashion. Plants go in and out of style seasonally and yearly.

Your local nursery will be able to tell you what those old standards are as well as what is hot this season. Remember sometimes a nursery will have staff they send to Garden Shows and Exhibitions - this keeps local businesses in the loop as to the direction garden fashion is headed.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

How do you keep & care for 'pet' caterpillars until they turn into butterflies?

My son %26amp; I 'hunted' %26amp; 'captured' 3 caterpillars that were devouring my pansies. We kept them in a jar w/ sticks to climb on, %26amp; fresh petunia buds %26amp; blossoms every 1-2 days, in hopes to keep them until they turned into butterflies. We put air holes in the jar covering, %26amp; every 2-3 days we would dip their new flowers into water for water droplets. I figured that it would be easy because we already knew what they ate, right. At first, it was fine, they ate good, etc. But 2 of them have died %26amp; the other one doesn't eat anymore. He just constantly climbs %26amp; burrows around like he's looking for something. What are we doing wrong?

Well we have had caterpillars and we just fed them flowers and fruit. I have no clue what you are doing wrong, it all sounds right to me. Sorry:(

Then you will know how HARD it really is. You gotta have lungs baby! Constant running about and without pads. Watch Bremen, Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Lyon or Manchester United, Boca Juniors, River Plate or any Brazilian club team BEFORE you make your final decision about soccer. At least at the DMV you get your license or registration as an end result.

How should I deal with a haunting?

Whilst perusing the fine wines of my extensive cellars, I happened upon a hidious apparition.

The entity loosely resembled a former employee, Groves the gardener, whom I accidentally killed with a chainsaw, a shotgun and a small explosion. We had been argueing about pansies.

How should one proceed with such a delicate matter? I am toying with some dynamite at the moment.

How should I deal with a haunting?
Good grief old chap nothing worse than an un-dead domestic. Sadly dynamite will only sever his apparition into thousands of undead fragments. Might I suggest you place a portrait of Ann Widdecomb in your wine cellar? This will so horrify the ghostly gardener that he will never appear again. Though you may risk turning the 1823 Chateau Lafitte sour....On second thoughts, I'd just stick with your gardener-ghoul old chap. Then conduct haunted guided tours of your estate for our American friends. You will therefore capitalise on the appearances of your servant spook.
Reply:Hello, my good sir. A haunting, you say? Then perhaps the folk remedy of a simple exorcism should do. Simply walk around the perimeter of your abode and the grounds and ask that each space be blessed. Furthermore, confront the troubled spirit. Perhaps it can tell you a way in which you can free it from the confines of your living space.

Oh, and might I simply ask why this inquiry has been placed in the "Gardening %26amp; Landscaping" section? I feel it should be placed in the "Supernatural" section if multiple, spot-on answers are what you seek.
Reply:It is insufferable that the wretched man not only had the gall to argue with you over who is to erect your wife's gazebo, Sir Terrance, but now has the most stupendous cheek as to disturb your peaceful enjoyment of your abode with further disputation on the matter.

Fire him - but this time by means of a large explosion. Haven't you got any of those nuclear bombs left?
Reply:My good Sir, may one suggest a product supplied by this company:

“Semtín East Bohemian Chemical Works” they supply all manner of products designed to remove things that are hard to get rid of? The last time I used the product it was supplied by a rather dodgy chap at a car boot sale but after a little persuasion he relinquished his supplier it is called VCHZ Synthesia, but most people call it Semtex?

It does have a rather big effect….just a tad better than dynamite old bean

one might suggest removing the wine first ?
Reply:I'm shaking with fear here ! Is the wine ok? As for the ghostly apparition, are you sure it wasn't the maid ? If it was a ghost, you may need to contact a certain chap I read about in local print. His name is Van Helsing. He'll sort the problem for a jar of sauerkraut. Good luck.
Reply:Quickly now, get thee to the butler's pantry, and procure a 2/3 weeding fork. With one half dram of arrowroot, circumsize the gesticum. Twirl sharply, and gesticulate toward the flagstones. Problem solved. Or is it?
Reply:You won't go far wrong with dynamite old boy, do remember to use plenty though, once while performing an exorcism at a chums house I didn't use nearly enough. I can tell you now I felt a right fool having only blown up half his haunted estate. Tip top.
Reply:Home depot sells anti haunting spray. Dilute it with water and spread evenly over the area where Groves likes to hang out. It he reappears, then dynamite may be your only answer.
Reply:Forget the dynamite - go see a psychiatrist.

Why can the word pansy be used in class, but not the word gay, or ******?

We are doing a reenactment of R%26amp;J and we can be creative with it. So my partner decides to make Mercutio gay, and in the script Tybalt refers to him as ******. But the teacher says we couldn't say ******, gay, homosexual, or queer. But she says we can use the word pansy. I don't see how that makes the statement any less demeaning. Why is the word pansy okay to be used, but not any of those other words when we are using them all in the same context?

Why can the word pansy be used in class, but not the word gay, or ******?
Because teachers make the rules up as they go along.

What did they call homosexuals in Shakespear's day? That would sound more appropriate. Sodomite? 'Pansy' just sounds damn stupid.

How about @rse bandit, shirt lifter or fudge packer instead. Lol.
Reply:i think you misunderstood the quote. He says go get him a ****** which back in the day meant a bundle of wood. you should quote that passage
Reply:A pansy can also refer to a flower
Reply:It is COMMONLY seen as less offensive than the other words.

It's actually more of an old-style word for homosexual. It's sort of a perception thing..

It connotes more of a feminine nature rather than "A homosexual that has sex with boys" You know?
Reply:They are derogatory and quite offensive.
Reply:Pansy is as derogatory as any of the other words, but in the context of Shakespeare, it would ''imply'' homosexuality without directly stating it. The ''flowery'' word seems a bit less aggressive, but is nonetheless a bad one.

Petunias and pansies.

I am in Australia, It is spring, how can I get rid of earwigs who are busily munching my new seedlings ?
The best way to reduce earwig populations is to locate and treat those areas outdoors where earwigs hide during the day. These include rotting tree stumps, cracks in tree trunks, beneath pottery and stones, behind loose building boards, and in organic mulch at the base of shrubs and other plants, especially in shady areas. Once you find them, treat the earwigs with an insecticde. It is best if a rather large volume of spray is used to soak mulch areas or other hot spots.

How long to wait before using Miracle Grow?

I just planted pansies and impatients in containers from starter plants, do I need to wait a period of time before using Miracle Grow on them or can I use it right away? Any info is much appreciated. Thanks!

How long to wait before using Miracle Grow?
I always water in fresh plantings with water soluble fertilizer. many nurseries and greenhouses use it.

Go ahead and feed now. Should be fine.. be sure to mix at the recommended rate.. not stronger!
Reply:thats the wonderful thing about mirace grow you can use it when ever before or after depends on which one your using shake an feed or the ones u mix wiff water if its the one you mix wiff water follow the direction an remember when you first feed it so you can feed it every 14 day at the same time good luck
Reply:I use Miracle Gro right after I plant my flowers. I don't do it again for a while. You have to follow the directions on the package. I mix it in a plastic milk jug with water.
Reply:Houseplant Doctor is right...

Believe it or not, something seemingly so good for plants (Miracle Gro) is like ADULT food for babies. Give them a chance to get established (esp. since you just transplanted) and then feed them.

Annuals (like pansies and impatiens) are not as hardy as perennials and I would do as others suggested and not exceed the recommended amounts. Don't worry about overdiluting, it's underdilution that can "burn" your little guys.
Reply:yeah sure u can use the miracle grow now.
Reply:The sooner the better...unless you used the potting soil that has Miracle Grow already in it? Otherwise, once a week would do them good...
Reply:It is professionally recommended to allow your plants to settle in for a week or two before using a water soluable chemical fertilizer. If you rush you can cause sever salt burn to the sensitive roots. It is always better to wait a bit.

You can use an organic based like neptune fish fertilizer right away because it takes time to break down before it is available to the plant thus allowing the roots to get settled in

This gives the plant the ability to use the nurtients when it is ready to take them up..
Reply:I use it every time I water. It will depend on your climate and how much sun the plants get but always follow container instructions and don't exceed the amount to add to your water jug.
Reply:you'll think this is crazy, but when you dig the hole for any plant, if you'll coat the hole sides and bottom with a thin layer of the blue granules (wear gloves or you'll look like you just finished off a Smurf) and then plant your flower, shrub or tree, you'll find this will stimulate the roots to begin growth sooner. This is especially helpful for bushed and trees when you want to get that root system established quickly.

the first watering is just water, but give it a good soak. After that water with MG in a hose end sprayer or garden can once a week to keep it growing and fed.
Reply:I usually just mix it in with my soil, so i guess you can use it right away - ask at a garden center if you are not sure. bettyk
Reply:I would suggest using Miracle Grow "Quick Start" when you plant or transplant anything -house plants, annual, perennials, garden veggies, trees, etc. After that, wait about 2 weeks for the plant to adjust and recovery root growth before using other Miracle Grow products.
Reply:You could actually do either or, but if you put the Miracle Grow on it now, then you will have more of a chance they will grow. If you wait ,then it won't work.

How should I start my flower garden?

Hey folks!

Today I am off to buy some plants to brighten up the front of our home. We have a large yard, but the front of our house is BORING. White house, white stairs... green grass. That's it. I will want a 12" deep strip of COLOUR against the front foundation of the house, and along one side that catches the sun.

What plants to do suggest that are EASY to care for, don't require a ton of watering, like the sun but can handle some shade, and are cheap? I'm not looking to have an award winnnig garden, just something to liven up the front of our house!

I really like hostas, I may plant some of them on the side of the house... I was thinking about pansies or something easy for the front of the house... I am 7 months pregnant, and won't have a ton of time or energy for garden upkeep other than the basic weeding and watering...

Thank you for your time!!

How should I start my flower garden?
Make sure to amend the soil, if it's needed, with a compost or peat moss. It'll need to be broken up well, crumbly. Pansies are at the end of their growing season now, they hate hot weather. I would go with begonias. Hardy, shade-tolerant, nice foliage. They generally come in two colors on the affordable end of the spectrum, red and white, and the foliage is dark green and green, respectively. AVOID water hogs like coleus, petunias and impatiens--as a father of five I know you will have NO time for watering. Make sure your new plants are watered-in after you plant, and you should have a great looking garden!
Reply:Petunia's.
Reply:Pansies are a great choice. Those things will grow upside-down on a rock, if you'll water it. I've had some in a pot that have come back every spring for the last 5-6 years.

Petunias are great also, for the same reason.

Reply:A basic 101 guide on how to plant a beautiful garden.

Steps

Find a spot in your yard or in a local community garden that gets both sun and shade. Ideally, some parts of it should get full sun (6 hours of CONTINUOUS sunshine per day), and some parts should get partial sun (either dappled sun, or full sun for less than 6 hours per day). Even if parts of your garden are in total shade, there are a variety of plants (including foliage plants and even flowers) that can flourish.

You'll need to prepare the land. Dig and churn up all of the packed dirt. Dig about 2 ft. down. If you want to, you can add some nice compost and mix it into your dirt.

Go buy some seeds! Seeds are so inexpensive at the Dollar Store or your local dollar market. Or, you can start with bedding plants (or seedlings) available at nurseries.

Look at the instructions on the back of the seed package, or on the plastic tag in your plant pot. You may have to ask experts when to plant them if it does not say on the back. Plant bedding plants when you are sure you can. Some seeds (such as tomatoes) should be started indoors, in small pots or seed trays, before the last frost, and only transplanted outdoors when the weather warms up.

Make sure to water your plant every other day. Don't drown them in water. A reasonable amount should be fine.

Watch your beautiful garden grow!

Tips

If you want you can buy plant food at the store as well. Put it in the hole with your seed or seedling. Adding organic matter (compost, for example) or a chemical fertilizer in with the soil in the hole will help the plant or seed to establish itself. But of course, don't use a lot of the fertilizer.

You don't have to plant flowers in rows necessarily, intertwining patterns usually come out very nice.

Be creative. Be classic. Make your garden you.

Perennial = comes up every year

Annual = needs to be planted again every year

A pick axe is GREAT way to break up hard ground. So is a pitchfork-shovel. PLEASE have someone knowledgeable show you how to use these tools firmly yet carefully %26amp; with the proper form to get quick results while not hurting yourself physically.

As far as planting vegetables, you don't always have to start from seed. You can plant most veggies that have started to "go bad" because they've grown roots. Or there are nurseries that sell "starts".

Learn how to compost and then use it as the rich soil matter it will turn into!

If you live near a horse farm, ask them if they have any horse manure compost to spare. This also makes great fertilizer!

Putting leftover, wet coffee grounds around your veggies in the garden is a natural way to keep slugs %26amp; other garden "pests" out. Plus, it adds beauty to the garden.

Don't throw away earthworms or kill them! They help aerate the soil to make your growing more successful. Put them back into the soil as you turn it over.

In most locations, dark green leafy veggies will continue to grow until there's a frost.

You really don't need an enormous space to yield a good amount of plants/flowers/veggies/herbs.

Have fun!

Warnings

Watch out for pesky animals and birds who will try to eat your garden. To avoid trouble with them, put up a fence.

The art of planting roses doesn’t have to be a complicated thing to do. When you have the right knowledge there is no limit to how beautiful a garden or rosebush that you can create.

Now you will have all of the beauty and delicious fragrance that roses can give you with you all the time.

Here are some of the best ideas and tips for planting your roses.

Steps

Talk with your local gardening center or florist to find out which are the best type of roses to grow in your climate. If you are a novice, look for disease resistant types of roses because they need a lot less maintenance.

When planting roses, pick a place that is well lit in the morning. You also want a spot that has sunlight for a minimum of 6 hours a day. Roses need a great deal of light to grow properly.

Choose an area with well drained soil. Great soil has a PH level at about 5.5-7.0. Testing kits are inexpensive and available at any garden center.

Organic matter like manure or lime helps to nourish the roots of your roses.

Soak the roots in water for 8 to 10 hours. Inspect the roots and cut off any root ends that are dead or broken.

Dig a hole that is two times bigger than the amount of space that your roses take up. Fill the bottom of the hole with a cone of soil to rest the roots on and position the bud union at about ground level. Fill the hole half way with soil and water. Wait for the water to filter down and fill the hole with the remaining soil. This process ensures complete root coverage with no air pockets. Do not tramp down the soil. Poor circulation for your roses can cause fungal diseases. Using a larger hole also makes it easier for you to pull them up later and pot them if you’d like.

Water your plants frequently for the first 3-4 weeks after planting your roses. Usually this is when the top 2 inches of soil is dry. To stay healthy your roses need a lot of hydration and food.

Four weeks after planting, you should start soaking the bed every 2 weeks or so. Do this in the morning for the best results.

Start to fertilize about 3 months after planting. Use 3-6 inches of mulch to control the moisture, temperature, and to stops weeds from popping up. Mulch also helps to lock in the vital nutrients your roses need in order to remain healthy.

Tips

It is best to plant roses in the Spring. Choose an area to plant that is well circulated with air. Your roses will not grow in an enclosed or tight area.

Roses love water but can get many fungal and bacterial diseases if they do not get enough sunlight in order to dry off their leaves and pedals. Plant your roses in morning light and remember at least 6 hours or sunlight.

Warnings

Always check your rose plants for diseases.

Who here believes using a belt or spanking a child is more effective?

Majority of Kids today are alarmingly turning into little B@sTurds because so many parents are using the pseudo-pansy alternative to establishing order in the house. Guess what? IT'S NOT WORKING.

It's not effective into setting the boundary between parent to child. Almost everytime I go out anywhere, I see them screaming obscenities to their parents, running up to strangers and touching them, perpetually mishandling store merchandise and screaming to no end!

Does Anyone out there in Y!A have any success in 'talking' your child out of turning into a miserable little brat? Seriously?

Who here believes using a belt or spanking a child is more effective?
Well I think spanking them teaches them discipline and self-control. If they don't want to get hit again, then they no better not to do that specific thing that made their parents hit them in the first place. Talking to your children can work sometimes, but i think its going downhill. Some parents may think hitting is "child abuse", but the parents who are doing it knows their limitations.
Reply:I believe in spanking but not with a belt or any other accessory. Generally it only takes two spanks to get a child back on track and after that you can talk to them successfully.
Reply:I sincerely hope if you ever use a belt to punish a child, that someone twice your size comes along and whacks the crap out of you with one.

And no "talking dosent always solve the problem but if you teach your children manners and enforce your rules with appropriate punishments when they are small, ex; time out, loss of privileges.... then your kids will grow up to be reasonably well mannered.
Reply:I try and stay calm with my boys. I know from experience that when they are throwing a fit or doing something wrong, and I show them that I am mad, it only makes things worse. Either they get more testy because they know they are succesfully pushing my buttons, or they get scared and they start screaming. There is a definate difference between wussing out as a parent and just not being violent. You have to have a firm voice, and let them know you mean buisness. My oldest is three and he has had his moments, but all I have to do is grab him firmly (not hard, with intent to hurt, just firm to get his attention) make eye contact and tell him without yelling what he is doing wrong. I make our conversations short and simple because I know his attention span is short. The parents who go on and on " you shouldnt do this because I said that, and I I said this and you did it anyways what do you think I should do because you misbehaved.... blah blah blah" that doesnt work. It should be "Do not do that, You could get hurt, Understand me?" Straight and to the point. I allow my son two chances, I will tell him once, and then remind him once, but the third time he gets tme out. Three minutes in the corner with his little nose to the wall. My son is fairly well behaved. I am careful with what I do and say and how I do it. Usually the parents whose children are misbehaving in public have little regard for their childs needs and feelings. These people are taking their children out into boring places with nothing for them to do, wearing them out untill theyre cranky and then pushing them more. When you go out with your children you should not only bring their basic need (Food, Drink, Diapers) But entertainment. They dont get joy in watching you try a shirt on, or grocery shop. They need books or a small toy to keep their attention. (That Leapster has saved my bum a few times in the Health Dept.) And going out without these things is setting youself up for trouble. So when you see these kids in public do not look down on them for not spanking their kids, look down on them for their bad parenting and decision making in general.

Parents are letting their children walk all over them now a days because they are afraid of their children hating them when they get to be 13, or so. The problem is.. they will hate you no matter what at some point or another. But your job isn't to be their friend, it is to be their leader. Parents shouldn't be afraid to repremand their children in public in fear of what others will think. The people looking down on them in the future wil realise you were in the right after all when their 10 year old is cursing them out, having sex, and doing drugs. And if you fail to correct them in public then that will be the time where the behave badly. Because they know you will not say anything.

There have been times when I have popped my son in the bum, but never a violent spanking. He hasn't ever done anything deserving of it. You have to start disciplining your children from a very young age. Not just suddenly decide at 3 years old they are walking all over you and you want to be the boss.
Reply:I'm not a parent, or anywhere close to it, but you don't get physical, no matter what. But if you give a warning, go through with it. For example, you say "If you do that again You'll lose (whatever)." and they do it again, Go through with it. After a while (yes, it does take up to months) they'll know you're serious, and they won't disobey you. Hope I Helped =D
Reply:As someone who isnt a parent but has been working with kids for years, I totally dont think spanking your kids is the answer. I mean am not saying if your 2 year old is about to put his hand on the stove and you go to pop him, thats a bit different than spanking an 8 yr old because of behavior. The problem today is parents dont follow through! I see it ALL the time! They just do empty threats..its ridiculuas!!!!!!! JUST follow through.
Reply:EVEN THOUGH I'M STILL NOT AN ADULT AND HAVE A KID I DONT THINK THAT SPANKING OR HITTING UR KIDS IS THE ANSWER BECAUSE YOU JUST NEED TO TALK AND THATS IT THERES NO NEED TO HURT BECAUSE ALL ITS DOING IS GIVING THEM FEAR OF DOING ANYTHING!!
Reply:It needs to be talking coup[led with lack of privileges- there ARE other things to do, in between talking and using violence! Take away tv, video games, friends, favorite toys...many, mnay things to do besides getting your child to 'cower' under your authority by using violence. One of my favorites a friend turned me onto- physical labor as punishment- for example, my son, talking about his new teacher, called her a '*****', so since he wanted to have a trashy mouth, he got gloves and a garbage bag and had to pick up all trash around and on the edge of the street. That was last summer- haven't heard the word since. Weeding and picking up after the dogs are favorites in my house too for misbehavior...

You talk about boundaries, but spanking or using a belt (too much, IMO) teach your child there are no boundaries- you teach them not to hit other kids or adults, than you go and smack them, shattering any sense of trust or personal boundaries. I think belts and spanking are for parents at their wits' end who haven't the patience or knowledge to explore other options. I'm less hard against spanking, not my thing, I think too many parents use it too often, I think using a belt is child abuse, plain and simple.

I think anyone who uses spanking, slapping, etc regularly as a way to 'treach' their child is lazy and ignorant.
Reply:i talk to my child first he gets 2 warnings then i smack him , it is rare that i have to smack cos he knows i mean it! i agree with you though you need to set boundries early on ,i wouldnt use a belt or anything though i think thats cruel!so i think both methods but no talking and nothing else holds no boundries so its the well your not going to do anything attitude so i will do as i want it does not work!my friend tells her kids off thats it,and they are sooooo badly behaved!
Reply:I don't believe in using a belt, but if my kids step out of line you best believe I'll whoop them. They have one chance, if they don't listen the first time when I tell them something, the second time they WILL get spanked.
Reply:I am soooooooooo with you! My parents taught me boundaries, and I got my share of welts on my butt. But people are having kids much earlier in their lives now too. I think that has just as much to do with all the little brats running around as the lack of discipline theory!
Reply:Well, seeing someone call kids B@sturds and miserable little brats.....it is not surprising that you believe in spanking. You were probably spanked yourself, I am guessing.....One wonders why many people today have bitterness and anger issues?

No spanking for my kids, thanks! They are well behaved and obedient without me hitting them and causing them to fear me!
Reply:Spanking may work short-term but long-term it does not result in self-control. It only results in the person being scared of you specifically. If thats your only goal in parenting your kid then fine, your kid will do what you say out of fear of you. As soon as your kid gets out of your view in life they will have no decision making skills. Spanking is a personal issue. If someone hits you, you have a personal issue with that person for a long time. If you want issues with your kids, spank and hit them. There are a lot of other natural consequences that are better at teaching kids self-control. self-discipline and decision making skills. Depends ojn your gaol as a parent and how limited you are as a person. I see spankers as kind of 'limited' in their mentality, not too successful etc. But you do whatever you have to do. Its better that than some out of control little **** or some time bomb who goes off at age 21 the first time they meet a girl because they are so out of control in their emotions. Especially true for boys who need to be taught how to deal with their own emotiosn and not be used to deal with other peoples issues,.

DONT HIT YOUR KID WITH A BELT. You will see yourself as a lunatic and so will your kid. As soon as they are old enough to call the cops, they can charge you with assault. The best was best around the turn of the century behind the old woodshed. You would be a nutcase today if you start running around hitting your kid with a belt just as we would see a lot of other old methods. Let that one go.
Reply:While personality has a lot to do with it, I think the problem is not the lack of corporal punishment. It is that no discipline of any sort is being done in the first place. Some of the parents are as bad and selfcentered as their children. I get tired of the "pick your battles" argument. It is NOT OK to run screaming through a restaurant or a store. Not ever. For one thing, when they fall, they fall on concrete which causes severe injury. It is the parent's job to make their children behave in public or they don't belong in public. I see one Dad bring both his Downs Syndrome children out all the time. They are wonderfully behaved even when they have trouble venting frustration. I completely understand a single parent who has an autistic child who screams for no apparent reason. They have more on their plate than my ears. But that is not the case with most of the children who are not behaving.
Reply:There is no simple answer to your question. I used to think there was. No spanking, period.

Kids each have their own unique personalities, growing pains, and issues to deal with. The punishment for misbehavior for one may not work for another. Saying that one punishment, such as spanking, is child abuse is absurd. These are either people that have never had kids or parents that have had the luck of spawning or adopting an easy child.

Punishment example: Firm Talk

You get down to their eye level (often on your knees), get eye contact, hold them by the arms, and tell them firmly that they aren't to do something. You stay consistant in your message. Works for some. But other children "forget" within minutes of telling them. The fact is, some children either don't care what they were just told cause the punishment doesn't amount to much, or it's not a memorable punishment so they didn't learn.

Punishment Example: Timeout

This is usually used in conjunction with, and an escalation from the Firm Talk. The intent is the child will sit or stand in a spot (such as a corner facing away from people) so that they can reflect on what they've done and miss out on "playing" for the period of the timeout. The thinking here is that the more time they think about what they've done wrong, the better chance it will have to sink in. However, some kids are so busy crying their eyes out or otherwise thinking "why are you doing this to me" or "you're being mean to me" for all the attention it may gain them, that they completely fail to connect the punishment with the behavior. So, although this works for some, it doesn't work for all. They "forget" just like the "Firm Talk".

Punishment: Taking away assets or privledges

Another handy tool is to take away entertainment (e.g. toys, TV, etc.) for a predefined period of time. If the entertainment you're taking away really matters to the child, then this can be effective. However, there are kids that live in the moment. They cannot see 5 minutes down the road. They are so into "instant gratification" that they'll give up everything they have to get their way right now. If you're going to use this tool (like the others) it's important to carry out the punishment. If consistant, they may soon connect that their choices are impacting their quality of life. But then again, some just don't care.

Punishment: Spanking

This punishment uses the principals of basic physics. For every action is a reaction. You learn that if you touch the fire, it'll burn you. So, you don't do it again. The delivery of the punishment can be within seconds of the action. The line between abuse and punishment is pretty thick. There is a big difference to attempting to spank while you're own temper is out of control (abuse), to calmly holding your childs hands so they don't cover their fanny and then giving them a controlled slap on the behind. In fact, the latter is much more effective because it's a big production (the fear is in the coming of a spanking, not the actual feeling of a tap on the behind). The former is terrorizing because your parent, the one you count on for everything, just lost complete control and you're the target. Is this effective for all children? Yes. But, a well adjusted child would interpret the action as a lesson that it's okay to hit. So, don't use it on a well adjusted child. A child in which the aforementioned methods fail will get the message with the spanking punishment. And, this type of child knows that it was their actions that provoked the response.
Reply:I am only 20 and expecting I am all for it, it is not abuse if you dont do it too hard, whoever made it illegall should get a spanking ha ha ha

how you raise your children is your own busness ang people need to keep theit noses in their own life
